PSU stands for Power Supply Unit.
Power Supply Units are used to convert mains AC into a low-voltage regulated DC needed to power the motherboard.
PSU's deliver various levels of power but the highest a modern day computer will need is 12V.
The PSU is an important part of your machine. If it fails you must have it repaired or replace but how do you know it's your PSU?
Diagnosing PSU Failure
- Check everything is plugged in: if this is the first time your computer has randomly turned off on you then it may be entirely possible that you simply pulled the cord out by accident.
- Try to turn it on: If it isn't turning on we all know something's wrong.
- check and see if it takes longer then usual to start up and shut down your computer.
- Listen for beeps: rapid beeping and not being able to boot the system can indicate a power supply failure. Other strange noise near the back may also be an indication.
- If you turn it on and it turns itself off or you turn it on and it works fine until you play games then it turns off or get the blue screen. These are signs of a PSU failure.
- Check for various failures in the computer such as memory errors, HDD file system corruption and system start up failures. These usually are usually related to the power supply
- Finally check the fan inside the computer, if it isn't spinning then perhaps your system is overheating.
Age: like anything PSU's get worn out over time and simply need to be replaced.
Dirt: house dirt and dust and even cigarette smoke can stop your PSU working
Electrical disturbances: Electrical storms can short circuit the PSU along with powerspikes and other disturbances.
Overheating: if the fan stops working inside the computer then the PSU can overheat making it breakdown (Click here to be directed to fans on Powersearch).
